<A Message of Solidarity from Korean Civil Society to the People of the United States Resisting Tyranny>

To the citizens of the United States who stand against injustice,

We extend our deepest respect and solidarity.
We are the National Council for the Current Situation (Jeon-guk Si-guk Hoe-ui), one of the major civic organizations in the Republic of Korea.

The National Council for the Current Situation is a key organization within Korean civil society, composed of democratic activists who have devoted their lives since the 1960s to the struggle for peace, unification, and democratization in Korea. Our members have carried forward the historical legacy of the Korean democracy movement. Most recently, we served as a co-chair organization of the Emergency Action for National Reform and the Liquidation of Treason, which helped bring down the Yoon Suk-yeol regime last winter—a regime that declared martial law and sought to suppress its own citizens at gunpoint by mobilizing the military.

Korean civil society has long fought for democracy through sacrifice and perseverance—from the April 19 Revolution of 1960, through the Yushin dictatorship of Park Chung-hee in the 1970s, and the military dictatorship of Chun Doo-hwan in the 1980s. Through these struggles, our citizens achieved the long-cherished victory of democracy. In the 21st century, we again rose to defend it—through the 2016–17 Candlelight Revolution that led to the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye, and through the “Revolution of Light,” when citizens stood against Yoon Suk-yeol’s attempted coup and martial law declaration last winter.

Today, the people of Korea look with deep concern at the developments in the United States. We witness President Trump’s demands for $350 billion in investment and tariff pressures on other nations, as well as his apparent attempts to invoke the Insurrection Act to mobilize the military and consolidate an authoritarian system. Many in Korea fear that this could mark the emergence of an “American Yoon Suk-yeol” — or even a new form of American fascism.

In this context, we express our wholehearted solidarity with the American citizens organizing the October 18th “No Kings Day” rally — a movement to defend the U.S. Constitution and to advance the universal human values of life, human rights, peace, and democracy. On behalf of the people of the Republic of Korea, the National Council for the Current Situation sends you our solidarity, support, and encouragement.

Just as Korea’s Revolution of Light demonstrated the power of ordinary citizens and the resilience of democracy to the world, we hope that the No Kings Day gathering of the American people will serve as a new milestone for global citizens who love freedom and democracy.

The civil society of the Republic of Korea affirms its firm solidarity with peoples everywhere who strive to protect the values of life, human rights, peace, and democracy. We close with these words:

우리는 대한민국의 시민단체중 하나인 ‘전국시국회의“라고 합니다.
전국시국회의는 대한민국 시민사회의 주요 단체로 1960년대 이후 한국 사회의 평화와 통일을 위해 민주화 투쟁에 참여해온 민주인사들이 한국 민주화 운동의 역사성을 이어오며 결집한 단체로, 특히 지난 겨울 군을 동원하는 계엄령을 선포하여 시민들을 총칼로 억누르려 했던 윤석열 정권을 광장 시민의 힘으로 몰아낸 ”내란청산 사회대개혁 비상행동’의 공동의장 단체입니다.

대한민국의 시민사회는 1960년 4.19 혁명부터 1970년대 박정희 유신독재, 1980년대 전두환 군부독재까지 수없이 피흘리며 기나 긴 세월을 싸워오면서 시민들의 염원인 민주주의의 승리를 이루어 왔고 21세기 들어서는 2016~17년 박근혜 정권을 탄핵시킨 ”촛불혁명“과 지난 겨울 계엄령 선포로 시작된 윤석열 정권의 내란시도까지 시민들의 힘으로 막아내며 ”빛의 혁명“까지 수많은 투쟁을 거치며 민주주의를 지켜왔습니다.

한국 시민들 역시 최근 트럼프 행정부의 3,500억불 투자요구와 관세압박에 저항하는 상황에서, 미국 내에서 트럼프가 반란법을 이용하여 군을 동원, 독재 체제를 만들려는 시도를 목격하며 미국판 윤석열, 또는 미국판 파시즘의 등장을 예고하는 것은 아닌지 매우 우려하고 있습니다.

이런 상황에서 미국의 시민들이 미국의 헌법정신을 지키고 인류 보편의 가치인 생명, 인권, 평화, 민주의 길로 나아가고자 조직하는 10.18 ”No Kings Day“ 집회에 우리 ”전국시국회의“는 대한민국 시민을 대신하여 연대와 지지, 응원을 보내드립니다.

대한민국의 시민들이 이루어낸 ”빛의 혁명“이 이 시대 전 세계에 시민의 힘과 민주주의의 회복력을 보여준 것과 같이 미국 시민 여러분의 ”No Kings Day“ 집회가 민주주의를 사랑하는 전 세계 시민들에게 새로운 이정표가 되어주기를 기원합니다.

대한민국 시민사회는 생명, 인권, 평화, 민주의 가치를 지키려는 전 세계와 연대하는 입장을 분명히 밝히며, 다음 구호로 인사를 대신하겠습니다.
